There are plenty of things to do in Tutukaka, whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a mix of both. Let’s dive into some of the best things to do while you’re here.
Getting here: Where is Tutukaka?
Tutukaka is super easy to reach — we’re just under a three-hour drive from Auckland. You’ll cruise up State Highway 1, with Whangārei being a great spot to stretch your legs along the way. As you get closer, you’ll pass through Ngunguru, a lovely little village with a picturesque beach and estuary. It’s worth the stop! When you’re visiting from Auckland to Tutukaka, the journey is part of the adventure.
What to do in Tutukaka
Explore a world-class diving site at Poor Knights Marine Reserve
Now, let us tell you about our pride and joy — the Poor Knights Islands. They’re just 22km off the coast and boast an endorsement from the legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau, who called them one of the top dive sites in the world. These ancient volcanic islands are over 11 million years old, and their underwater landscape is simply breathtaking.
Whether you’re an experienced diver or a first-timer, the marine life here is incredible — you’ll encounter fish you won’t find anywhere else in New Zealand and in abundance, too. Subtropical conditions and its protected status support a thriving ecosystem that people from all over the world visit Tutukaka for. But if diving isn’t your thing, there are plenty of other ways to explore, like kayaking, snorkelling, or taking a scenic cruise. You can even float through underwater caves or marvel at the towering cliffs. Trust us, the Poor Knights is one of those bucket-list experiences you’ll never forget.
Beach hop your way through the coast
If summer for you means heading to the water, exploring Tutukaka’s stunning beaches should be at the top of your list. Tutukaka is home to some of New Zealand’s most beautiful and underrated beaches, each a short distance from our Tutukaka hotel. Start with Matapouri Bay—it’s a local favourite with calm, crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming. From there, you can check out Whale Bay, another gem known for its soft white sand and pōhutukawa trees. If you’re planning a picnic, these trees are great for providing shade — but don’t forget to pack sunscreen!
Not in the mood for a swim? No problem! Pack a book, bring some summer games, or just soak up the sun. Frisbee or Spikeball, anyone? And while you’re out there, let’s all do our bit to keep these beaches beautiful: pack out your rubbish and try to leave the place in the same pristine condition as you found it. Dogs are also prohibited to protect delicate native wildlife.
Quick local note – Matapouri Bay’s Mermaid Pools are currently under a rāhui (protection order) arranged by the Department of Conservation and local iwi, meaning they are closed to visitors. Don’t worry, though; you won’t be short on beach options!
Tutukaka weather: soak up the sunshine
Did we mention the weather? Tutukaka’s got that perfect coastal climate—warm, sunny, and ideal for outdoor adventures for most of the year. Summer temps usually hover between 20–24°C, with long, sunny days stretching from October through March. It’s basically summer holiday perfection.
