Looking for a walk that combines stunning coastal views with a little bit of adventure? The Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk has it all! A must-do for anyone staying in the area, this walk provides stunning panoramic views of the Poor Knights Islands, Tutukaka Harbour, and Northland’s spectacular eastern coastline.

Whether you’re up for a family outing or just some time to soak up the scenery, this walk won’t disappoint. Here’s everything you need to know to plan your visit, plus a few tips from us to make the most of it!

Getting to the Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk

You’ll find the start of the walk at Tutukaka Head, just 30 minutes from Whangārei and a short drive from most Tutukaka accommodation. To get there, turn onto Landowners Lane, on the right side of Matapouri Road, about 500 meters north of the Tutukaka Marina. Landowners Lane is a private access road, but don’t worry about the “Private Road” sign—you’re in the right spot. Take it slow, as the road can be narrow in some places.

What to know about the Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk

The Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk takes about an hour, but don’t let its short length fool you — there’s plenty to see along the way! The path leads to Kukutauwhao Island, managed by the Whangārei District Council, and it’s got a little bit of everything: grassy headlands, native bush, and unbeatable views. The walk is brief but does include steep sections and is prone to getting slippery after it’s rained, so we suggest taking it easy; that way, you get to enjoy the views more, too.

The walk to the lighthouse starts off easy and flat on grassy headland. The path here is easy to follow and features an optional side path for those who fancy a quick detour to a rocky beach — ideal for relaxing rather than swimming. Next, you’ll take the stairs down to the beach, which connects Kukutauwhao Island. This section can be tricky because it gets submerged at high tide, so plan your walk for low tide and give yourself a couple of hours on either side to cross safely. If the tide’s in or the weather’s rough, it’s best to save the adventure for another day.

Once you’re across, the path takes you through beautiful native bush. This part is a bit more rugged, but you’ll be rewarded with the soothing sound of waves and native birds that create a serene soundtrack to conclude this half of the walk. The walk concludes at the lighthouse, where breathtaking views of the surrounding seascape steal the show. Trust us, it’s worth every step!

What to pack for the Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk

We recommend bringing:

  • Your camera: Photography hobbyists and enthusiasts are in for a treat. Both wide and telephoto lenses will serve you well. In a pinch, the camera on your phone will do the job.
  • Comfortable shoes: Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip will make it easier to navigate different terrain, especially if it’s been raining.
  • A hiking pole: If you’re not a fan of steep paths, a hiking pole can provide extra support.
  • Snacks and water: The walk isn’t long, but we believe you deserve a treat anyway. Enjoy a picnic at the top, but please remember to take your rubbish with you.
